Advanced Weather Radar to Strengthen Wayanad Disaster Preparedness

Wayanad is set to receive a dedicated X-band Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) to strengthen weather observation and early-warning capabilities in the district. The radar is being established at Pulpally on land provided by Pazhassi Raja College and is intended to improve monitoring of weather conditions across the hilly region.

The project addresses gaps in existing radar coverage over Kerala’s hilly regions, including Wayanad. The Ministry of Earth Sciences has identified a location in Wayanad for a new Doppler Weather Radar as part of efforts to improve weather monitoring and make the country more prepared for extreme weather events.

The X-band radar will provide high-resolution information on rainfall and developing weather systems, helping meteorological agencies improve local weather observation. Better monitoring can support earlier warnings during periods of intense rainfall and other severe weather conditions.

For a district that is vulnerable to heavy monsoon rainfall and landslides, stronger weather observation can contribute to improved disaster preparedness. Information from the radar can support authorities in planning timely responses, issuing warnings and coordinating emergency measures.

The radar project represents an important addition to Wayanad’s disaster-management infrastructure, strengthening the district’s capacity to use advanced weather technology for safer and more resilient communities.
