Agriculture, tribal welfare, environmental protection and rehabilitation following landslides emerged as some of the key issues shaping the 2026 political debate in Wayanad. Political campaigns across the district placed greater emphasis on concerns directly affecting farmers, tribal communities, workers and residents living in environmentally sensitive areas.
Wayanad’s economy is closely connected with agriculture and plantation-based livelihoods, making issues such as crop prices, farming support, irrigation, access to markets and rising production costs important topics for voters. Campaign discussions also highlighted the need to strengthen support systems for small and marginal farmers.
Tribal welfare remained another major concern, with attention focused on education, healthcare, housing, employment opportunities, land rights and better access to government welfare programmes. Political discussions also emphasized the importance of protecting the cultural identity and traditional livelihoods of indigenous communities.
Environmental protection and landslide-related rehabilitation featured prominently as well. Following devastating landslides in parts of Wayanad, questions surrounding disaster preparedness, safe habitation, ecological protection, rehabilitation of affected families and sustainable development became important parts of the public debate.
The district’s three Assembly constituencies—Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta—saw active political campaigning around these local concerns. The 2026 political discourse reflected the district’s continuing effort to balance agricultural development, tribal welfare, environmental conservation and disaster resilience.
